AS ONE (Regensburg Premiere)

  • Theater Regensburg 7 Bismarckplatz Regensburg, BY, 93047 Germany (map)

Partially inspired by Kimberly Reeds own experiences as a transgender woman, the chamber opera AS ONE tells the story of Hannah, portrayed by a baritone (Hannah before) and a mezzo-soprano (Hannah after). Fifteen scenes compassionately and humorously depict Hannah's youth experiences in a small town up to her college years. Eventually, she travels to a different country and attempts to "become one" with herself.

Laura Kaminsky's accessible style incorporates elements of minimal music and shows influences from composers like Leoš Janáček, Aaron Copland, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. A string quartet is utilized, with the viola often swimming against the "mainstream" alongside its three colleagues.

AS ONE premiered on September 4, 2014, at the Fisher Space of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, commissioned by the American Opera Project. According to the Opera America magazine, it is the most frequently performed opera in North America since its premiere.
