6:30 P.M. WATCH PARTY
8:00 P.M. Q+A
The University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health will present the music-theater work, SEMMELWEIS, inspired by the tragic story of nineteenth-century Hungarian obstetrician, Ignác Semmelweis (1818–1865), who discovered the cure for a devastating epidemic but could not convince the world of the simple solution. Semmelweis was the first to see an unthinkable truth—a deadly disease was passing from the bodies of the dead to healthy mothers on the unwashed hands of the doctors themselves.
After the watch party, viewers will be joined by presenters Raymond J. Lustig, composer and Matt Gray, General Director of The American Opera Project, as well as facilitators David Finegold (Human Genetics) and Cindy Bryce (Health Policy & Management) for a Q & A.
SEMMELWEIS explores the theme that what we think we know can be overturned suddenly. What is it like to be the first to perceive a truth too awful to believe? To be an outsider—a “foreign” doctor living and working in Vienna’s top hospital during a xenophobic era—and to be haunted by all the mothers that would not be saved.
Registration is required! Once you’re registered, you will be sent a Zoom link on the event day.
