AOP's Composers & the Voice is a two-year fellowship for composers and librettists
that provides experience writing for the voice and opera stage.

The Composers & the Voice Workshop Series is a competitive biannual fellowship offered to composers, librettists, and composer/librettist teams. Created and led by Composers & the Voice Artistic Director Steven Osgood, the two-year fellowship includes a year of working with the company’s Resident Ensemble of Singers and Artistic Team followed by a year of continued promotion and development through AOP and its strategic partnerships. Since launching in 2002, C&V has fostered the development of 54 composers & librettists.

With each new group of fellows, sponsorships are named in honor of mentors and their support of Composers & the Voice. During the workshop session these “Composer & the Voice Artistic Chairs" make themselves available to our fellows for one-on-one discussions and feedback. Past chairs have included composers Mark Adamo, John Corigliano, Tan Dun, Daron Hagen, Jake Heggie, Lee Hoiby, Libby Larsen, John Musto, Richard Peaslee, Tobias Picker, Kaija Saariaho, and Stephen Schwartz, and librettist Mark Campbell.

perla “C&V - what a great experience! Composing for and collaborating with AOP’s fantastic singers over an extended period was an invaluable opportunity to hone my instinct for what does, and sometimes doesn’t work for operatic voices. Steven Osgood’s deep experience in the field kept our sessions focused with clarity and grace.”
- Jack Perla (2007-08), composer, Shalimar the Clown, An American Dream

“Composers & the Voice is an essential program for any composer writing for voice. I have never encountered such a thorough course that explains the details of vocal technique in a way that is musical and intuitive. The experience is unmatched with any other syllabus I have seen at a conservatory or college. I wish C&V a long life as it is unique and a vital part of the vocal new music scene in this country.”
- Vivian Fung (2003-04), composer, 2012 Juno Award Winner

Spears “Hearing singers discuss in detail their experience learning and performing a new piece has revolutionized the way I write for the voice.”
- Gregory Spears (2007-08), composer, Fellow Travelers, Paul’s Case
