SPRING STREET
Composed by PETE M. WYER
BASED ON THE poetry of Steve Dalachinsky and Yuko Otomo
A wildly eclectic opera film with musical styles from Baroque to 80’s disco. Three characters live in the same apartment block on Spring Street. A reluctant and resentful performer; a longtime resident, both wise and sad; a young and optimistic woman, excited about the city and its possibilities. Based on the poetry of downtown NYC legends Steve Dalachinsky and Yuko Otomo.
“I wrote Spring Street out of affection for lost friends and old memories,” says composer Pete M. Wyer. “I stayed at Steve and Yuko's apartment near Spring and 6th Av many times between 2007 and 2017 and knew them and their poetry very well. I loved the confluence of old New York with the new at that place, the endless new energy washing over and bumping up against the grittier, older voices of its past, people flowing down Spring Street like 'the great river of shades' as Ungaretti put it.”
