the hare and the hawk

Composed by anthony davis
libretto by Steven fechter

THE HARE AND THE HAWK is an allegory about gluttony and greed and whether it is in our nature to exhaust our resources and engage in behavior that we know is self-destructive. Aurally-focused, the sounds of the forest are provided through extended string techniques and an atmospheric chorus of pine trees. This all-ages opera speaks to the realistic fears of an artistic young hare named Tooth who must “shelter in-place” out of fear of the hawk, then turns to his art to survive. The hawk is a rapacious female raptor named Red, who only knows how to hunt and abuse her resources. This is a story with themes all too familiar in today’s world.
