“An abundance of genuinely poignant moments and brilliantly creative artistic elements.”
– Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
PS21 presents the semi-staged concert version of Douglas Cuomo’s chamber opera Savage Winter (commissioned and developed by AOP and Pittsburgh Opera). Scored for tenor, keyboards, trumpet, guitar, and electronics, with projected images from the original production that add depth and dynamism, the music—brimming with raw energy and emotion—encompasses 21st-century art song, acid jazz, and punk.
Compressed into 75 uninterrupted minutes, Savage Winter resembles a solo operatic Long Day’s Journey into Night or Samuel Beckett’s Not I. This time the journey is into a Dantesque Purgatory—and possibly back to redemption.
