The new season of Brooklyn Cultural District Tours, co-presented by FAB FULTON and Fort Greene-based American Opera Projects is underway!
The Brooklyn "Cultural District" continues to grow and change, with recent additions Center for Fiction and the Theatre for a New Audience, as well as renovations underway on the BAM Harvey Theater on Fulton Street. The promise of a major new cultural hub in Brooklyn is finally being realized. Institutions that have thrived here for years, such as MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts), Mark Morris Dance Center and Irondale Ensemble still contribute to the performing and visual arts footprint, exposing an entirely new generation to creative treasures.
Explore the past, present, and future of the district on this free 2-hr guided walking tour on Saturday, June 1 and learn how this concentration of venues and people is shifting the cultural landscape of the borough and the city. Over the course of 120 minutes, you will stroll through the timeless tree-lined streets of Fort Greene, past plazas and lively retail areas to view street art, new venues and where more than a dozen organizations have already made the Brooklyn Cultural District a venerable arts destination for performances of every type, large and small. Adding to the historical aspect, "pop-up" performances by American Opera Projects artists accompany the tour.
Tour Leader Dr. Ron Janoff is a licensed tour guide, a professor of Classics, Coordinator of the Rockwell Place Community Garden in the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, and a long-time Fort Greene resident. He has led walking tours of Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 25 years.
The tour is FREE, but space is limited and advance registration is required. The group will meet at 11am at the large, open plaza area near the digital BAM marquee sign at Flatbush and Lafayette Aves. Stay tuned for information on future 2019 dates, which will be posted on fabfulton.org. (Up next: July 6 and August 6.)
